Shin Saimdang was a remarkable Korean artist of the Joseon Dynasty who observed nature closely and expressed what she saw through painting and writing.
Yet her life cannot be fully understood through the title of “artist” alone.
Growing up at Ojukheon in Gangneung, young Saimdang was deeply loved by her mother. When she married and had to leave her hometown, she also had to leave the mother she cherished. As she crossed the Daegwallyeong mountains, she looked back toward her childhood home with longing.
That love and longing remained within her.
They became the way she looked at nature, the paintings she created, and the words she left behind. The love she received from her mother was later passed on to her own children, including her son Yulgok Yi I.
